The 1934 Ford is the Pioneer Fire Co.'s current antique truck. The Ford was purchased initially back in 1934 from a local Ford dealership in Jenkintown. The chassis was sent off to Hale for customization of the standard chassis into that of a fire engine. A pump and body were added during this modification. The pumper remained in service in Jenkintown until 1950 when it would be sold to the Graterford Fire Company in Perkiomen, PA. The 1934 Ford served as Graterford Fire Co.'s first motorized piece of apparatus. Serving them through their change to the Perkiomen Volunteer Fire Company. The pumper remained in service in Perkiomen until 1962 when it would be sold to a local collector in Pottstown.
In 1963 the Ford was sold to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI where it would be featured on the showroom floor of the museum from 1963 to 1978. After departing the Henry Ford Museum the truck was sold to various private owners; at least three that appear evident in our records. At this time the whereabouts were lost to the Pioneer Fire Company.
In 1999, by chance the 1934 Ford re-appeared on our radar. During a monthly meeting the company was called by a private owner located in Toledo, OH was in ownership of the pumper. The owner was seeking to sell the truck and was inquiring if the company was in the position to purchase. The owner was able to track us down from original invoices discovered in a compartment of the pumper dated 1948! The company sent several members out to inspect the truck, and the decision was then made to buy this storied piece of our company history.
After the acquisition the piece was featured in several local parades in mostly its original condition, including the original ladders marked "PFC". The pumper would eventually undergo a lengthy restoration project undertaken by a dedicated group of Pioneer members, finally returning to service in time to celebrate the 4th of July Parades in 2022.
